Surgery & Anaesthesia Carefully planning, preparing and putting our much-loved patients under sedation (such as for obtaining x-rays or cleaning and dressing wounds) or under general anaesthesia for surgical procedures (including but not limited to desexing procedures; lump biopsy and/or removal; skin wound repair) or dental treatment is not only a part of our everyday work, but is something that all our team have a great interest in. While we understand the inevitable anxiety many people experience knowing their much-loved pets are going ‘under’ anaesthesia, please rest-assured that each individual patient has their anaesthetic plan customised to their unique requirements and every patient is assigned their own veterinary nurse throughout their procedure and recovery as well as being over-seen by the veterinarian on-duty, who personally oversees their pre-anaesthetic/sedation health check and is alerted immediately to any concerns that may arise throughout the anaesthetic or sedation. On top of this, at Rathmines veterinary hospital, your anaesthetised pet will be electronically monitored (major vital signs including heart rate; blood pressure and core body temperature) to high-end fully automated monitoring equipment (this reduces our staff’s workload allowing them to focus directly on the health of your pet). - Pet Wellness Exams | Rathmines Veterinary Hospital & Catalina Cat Boarding
Pet Wellness Exams & Preventative Care At Rathmines veterinary hospital, the mainstay of our workload is in the management of the health of our much-loved patients and prevention of illness, where this is possible. Our philosophy is that as people, we take care of our own health and wellbeing and hence, we ought to take the same care of our animal companions. We tailor wellness care for each pet individually as we do not believe in a one size fits all approach. Wellness care incorporates general wellbeing, cardiac care, eye care, dental care, joint care (arthritis awareness and management primarily), family planning/desexing and vaccination recommendations among many other factors. Our vets are trained to the highest local and international standards and are regularly occupied by furthering their education through a variety of means including attending seminars and conferences; attending live-streamed online conferences and reading-up on various topics in medical journals; online and in textbooks. This enables our team of vets and veterinary nurses to ensure that your pet family member is looked after as best possible while under our care. In the unfortunate event that we are unable to provide all the necessary care for your pet (e.g. particularly complex medical or surgical cases), we work very closely with our local referral veterinary hospital – Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) at Tuggerah, Central coast as well as several tertiary care veterinary hospitals in Sydney. - Urgent Care Services | Rathmines Veterinary Hospital & Catalina Cat Boarding
Urgent Care Services As part of our service offering, we are very proud to be able to offer urgent and emergency care services to patients who are unfortunate enough to become unexpectedly unwell. In this event, we will do everything in our power to prioritise seeing you and your pet, but we do ask for patience in these situations as these cases are often seen on top of an already very busy workload. While we understand the level of stress these situations can cause, please be aware that our vets and veterinary nurses are well-prepared to deal with such situations and will do everything in their power to ensure the best possible outcome for you and your beloved pet. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be aware that at Rathmines veterinary hospital, we are NOT in a position to provide veterinary care outside of our normal operating hours due to a number of factors. These include staff burn-out and mental health concerns from over-working and particularly in the emotionally-intense veterinary care environment. Fortunately for our patients and clients, we have a great relationship with our two local ‘after hours’ emergency veterinary care providers: SASH (Small animal Specialist Hospital), in Tuggerah, Central coast and AREC (Animal referral and emergency centre), in Broadmeadow, Newcastle, to whom our patients are referred for urgent after hours’ care. - Internal Medicine Services | Rathmines Veterinary Hospital & Catalina Cat Boarding
Internal Medicine Services The short description of internal medicine would be something like: ‘Managing patients clinical needs without using surgery’. For anyone who wants a little more information: The term ‘Internal medicine’ refers to the treatment of a given patient with the use of diagnostics - think history-taking and nose to tail clinical examination (what we do in the consulting room), blood testing to localise any given issue(s) to a certain body or organ system, obtaining samples and/or biopsies; taking and reviewing x-rays, and occasionally referring patients for more advanced imaging such as abdominal ultrasound, echocardiograpy, CT scan, MRI scan and, of course, the use of the appropriate medications to attempt to counteract the symptoms of illness based on the attending veterinarian afflicting our beloved patients – your furry family members. In short, there is no short description of (internal) medicine…but essentially it is the essence of what we do every day. The thing that made most vets want to be vets when they were growing-up…taking a sick patient and working-out what it is that’s not quite right with them and doing whatever you can in your power to reverse the ailment and to return that patient, that animal, that beloved family member to their full health. And where that’s not possible, getting them as close as possible to that aim of full health, while always ensuring that the patients welfare, dignity and quality of life is maintained as without maintaining quality of life, one is not practicing best medicine.
